Performing Arts of all Kinds

One of Philadelphia’s most popular performing arts centers is home to the Philadelphia Orchestra and the Philadelphia Chamber Music Society. The organization hosts events from classical to contemporary music genres. The Kimmel Center for the Performing Arts offers everything from jazz to family discovery shows to the famed Philadanco dance company. Enjoy live shows, concerts, and the orchestra from the incredible 2,500-seat Verizon Hall or the flexible 650-seat Perelman Theater. It is owned and operated by Kimmel Center, Inc., which also runs the Academy of Music and the Merriam Theater, both of which are also located along Broad Street.

Performances at The Academy of Music

Home to the Pennsylvania Ballet and the hot spot for a Broadway show in Philadelphia and even opera. At the Academy of Music and Merriam Theater you can find family-friendly events or a wonderful theater production for a date night. The nearby Merriam Theater is Philadelphia’s most continuous location for Broadway shows. You’ll love enjoying the aesthetic of the Merriam after some fine dining at one of Center City’s award-winning restaurants. Aspiring ballerinas will want to enroll in the nearby Rock School for Dance Education, which has been reputed as one of the best pre-professional training programs for more than 50 years. The Carre d’artistes Gallery is a quaint space for you to explore contemporary exhibits and monthly featured artists. Several of these galleries are connected to the University of the Arts – the only school in the country that encourages students to work cross-dimensionally through traditional artistic boundaries. Dedicated solely to photography, the Sol Mednick Gallery offers a regular schedule of exhibits by emerging and well-known photographers from around the world. It is located on the 15th floor of Terra Hall, one floor above its sister gallery for contemporary photography, Gallery 1401. The University’s primary exhibit space can be found at the Rosenwald-Wolf Gallery, across from the Kimmel Center. Free and open to the public, the gallery offers exhibits as well as educational opportunities that support the University’s academic programming and promotes awareness of contemporary art.

The Packard Motor Car Building is located just 1.5 miles from the Art Museum area on the Benjamin Franklin Parkway. Properly known as Fairmount, the art museum area offers Philadelphians a variety of museums, shops, and galleries to explore.
